India has joined the ten leading growth nations in the world for wine consumption, according to a Vinexpo/IWSR report.

The statistics, released in New Delhi yesterday (17 March) also outlined projections for the period 2009 to 2013.

In 2008, wine consumption in India reached 1.449m cases (nine-litre), equivalent to 17.4m bottles, an increase of 372% compared to 2004.

The study forecasts an increase in Indian wine drinking of 1.475m cases between 2009 and 2013, making India the tenth largest growth nation for wine consumption in both volume and value terms.

“Estimates point to a further growth of over 100% in the consumption of imported wines in the period, reaching more than 5m bottles by 2013”, said Dominique Heriard Dubreuil, chairman of Vinexpo Asia-Pacific.

The report also noted that wine sales in Asia continued to race, touching US$7bn last year.
