The Global Travel Retail industry has received a boost in Australasia, with passengers arriving from New Zealand into two Australian airports no longer having to go into quarantine.
The move, which affects Perth and Sydney airports, comes after Australia and New Zealand announced a Trans-Tasman quarantine-free travel scheme, which, after around a year of restrictions, will allow visitors to and residents from both countries to visit without having to spend 14 days in quarantine. The first Air New Zealand service into Perth arrived from Auckland earlier today.
To keep risks to a minimum, airports will implement a zonal operational model. ‘Green zone’ passengers – those coming from ports on the Australian Government’s safe list – will be segregated from other passengers, to mitigate the risk of cross-contamination.
“Today’s milestone is a win-win for Australians and New Zealanders, boosting our economies while keeping our people safe,” said Australia’s Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, in a joint statement with his New Zealand counterpart, Jacinda Ardern. “Both countries have done a remarkable job in protecting our communities from COVID and two-way flights are an important step in our road out.”
GTR operators have taken a hammering from the coronavirus pandemic, much to the chagrin of premium spirits brand owners. Last month, trade organisation the Tax Free World Association pulled its planned industry exhibition for Asia-Pacific in preference for a fully-virtual show.
