On 23 June 1998, Scotland were beaten 3-0 by Morocco at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in St Etienne to be knocked out of that year’s World Cup in France. The match was Scotland’s last competitive game at a World Cup or European Championships.

Last year, however, Scotland booked a return to a major tournament by qualifying for the coronavirus-delayed Euro 2020.

Gleann Mòr’s new whisky, called Rare Find, celebrates Scotland’s pending return. Just under 300 bottles of the 22-year-old iteration, which was produced at Beam Suntory’s Bowmore distillery on Islay, will be available online at an SRP of GBP499 (US$706) per 70cl bottle.

Karin Mair, co-founder of Gleann Mòr, said: “We are delighted to finally be able to share this special edition with Scotland’s long-suffering football fans. During the almost 23 years that it’s been ageing, Scotland may have endured football heartache, but this sublime single malt has been waiting patiently, developing its distinctively divine character.”

Gleann Mor has released three other whiskies to honour the Scotland team, including a Glen Elgin 20-year-old single malt and two blends.

Euro 2020 kicks off on 11 June. The tournament’s main beverage sponsors are The Coca-Cola Co and Heineken.
