German beer sales fell by 9.1% in the first quarter of 2003, compared to the same period last year to 21.8m hectolitres, the Federal Statistics Office said on April 29, 2003.
Domestic beer sales fell by 10.5% year-on-year to 19.4m hectolitres. Meanwhile, 1.7m hectolitres of beer was sold in the EU countries, a rise of 1.9%.
Beer exported outside the EU reached 600,000 hectolitres, up 7.2%.
A spokesperson for the association of German beer brewers Deutscher Brauer-Bund said ealier in the month that beer consumption in Germany is expected to fall by 10% in 2003.
