France’s food safety agency, ANSES, has ruled that there is no scientific proof to support the health claims made by the company behind the anti-hangover drink, Outox.
The news is a blow to Outox International, which launched the drink in France earlier this year. It claimed that Outox could accelerate a natural decrease in blood alcohol levels and alleviate some of the harmful effects related to excessive drinking.
However, ANSES, which was commissioned to examine Outox by France’s consumer affairs ministry and trading standards authority (DGCCRF), called the claim “scientifically unfounded and therefore unacceptable”.
The watchdog said late last week: “A claim mentioning a reduction in blood alcohol levels presents a risk that is likely to give consumers a false sense of security.”
