Remy Cointreau plans to cut around a quarter of jobs at Champagne division Piper-Heidsieck, following a tough time for Champagne in the economic downturn.

Up to 45 jobs are set to go from a Piper-Heisieck workforce of 160.

The news came as official industry figures showed today (8 February) that global Champagne sales fell 9% by volume and 17% by value in 2009, compared to 2008.

Remy Cointreau last month reported a 4.5% drop in like-for-like sales in the first nine months of 2009, after strong demand for Cognac in Asia failed to fully offset sliding Champagne sales for the company.

Champagne sales tumbled by 32.5% for the period, although this improved to a 20% drop in the third quarter.
