Cognac exports reached a record high in 2010, reveal figures from trade body Bureau National Interprofessionnel Cognac (BNIC).
Exports rose by 30% to a record EUR1.86bn (US$2.5bn) for the 12 months to the end of December. Volumes increased by 18% on 2009 to 153.1m bottles, 5m short of the record set in 2007.
Shipments to the Far East spearheaded growth, rising by 34 % on last year to 50.9m bottles. Exports to China leapt by 55% to 18.8m bottles.
“China is a very dynamic market and one which is also supplied from Singapore and Hong Kong,” a BNIC official told just-drinks today (18 January). “Consumers there have a preference for the older, more expensive cognacs.”
Shipments to North America increased by 7.5 % to 49.2m bottles, while exports to European countries rose by 11.7 % to 46.7m bottles.
