Statistics published by the Interprofessional Committee for Champagne Wines (CIVC) showed that Champagne sales grew by 9.5% to 288m bottles in 2002. The figures represented something of a recovery following a 16% decline in 2001.

The CIVC data also revealed that France accounted for some 61% of the sales in volume terms. But sales outside the EU rose by 10%, accounting for 10% of 2002 volumes.
