The European Union Council of Ministers (EU) has removed natural mineral waters and spring waters from the scope of the EU’s geographical indication legislation.

The legislation provides protection to names marketing traditionally made drinks from defined regions in Europe.

Ministers however accepted a long 10-year transitional period before any of the 31 mineral or spring waters already on the EU’s protected register are removed.

These are all lines from Germany and include Caldener Mineralbrunnen, of Calden, and Ensinger Mineralquelle, of Vaiheigen-Ensingen. The removal of mineral and spring waters was suggested because of problem applications involving identical, invented or unsuitable names.
