Carlsberg Breweries is going to have to sort out its dispute with its partner in Thailand, find a new joint venture partner or risk losing its position in the market altogether, the Danish brewer’s executives were reported as saying in local press yesterday.

Carlsberg Breweries A/S announced that it was dropping representatives from Chang Beverages from the board of its Asian joint venture Carlsberg Asia Pte Ltd, late in June. The brewer said that the 50/50 joint venture set up between the two companies last year had not developed as it had expected.

Carlsberg said that “in order to protect its interests”, it had replaced Chang Beverages’ board members in Carlsberg Asia with Carlsberg Breweries representatives.

But Carlsberg Carlsberg Breweries chief executive director, Nils Smedegaard Andersen, was quoted as saying that Carlsberg will not be able to get a strong footing on the Thai market without a local partner.

Carlsberg Asia brews and distributes the beer brands Carlsberg and Beer Chang.
