The Southern Bohemia region and the town of Ceske Budejovice are considering making an attempt to acquire a majority stake in the state-owned brewer, Budejovicky Budvar, after the Czech Finance Ministry announced that it was looking to privatise the beer producer in the near future.

The deputy governor of Southern Bohemia, Karel Vachta, said the region does not see any reason for privatising Budejovicky Budvar as it is a profitable business with good management and contributes around CKr3.0m (US$109,000/€95,000) to the state budget in taxes a month.

The Czech government is planning to convert Budejovicky Budvar into a joint-stock company with a view to selling off the company by the end of 2004.
