Czech Republic’s fourth largest brewer, Budejovicky Budvar, has reported a 4.5% increase in beer sales by volume in 2008, as domestic demand offset an export decline.
Budejovikcy Budvar sold 1.3m hectolitres (hl) of beer last year, the brewer said late last week.
Domestic demand for Budvar beer rose by 9.7% to 731,059hl, despite a beer market decline of 3% in Czech Republic.
The firm reported a 1% drop in exports, however, and blamed the fall on the global economic crisis.
Renata Pánková, head of exports at Budvar, said that the Budweiser brand maintained share in foreign markets during 2008. She added that export sales, which totalled 581,522hl, were still the second highest in the brewer’s history.
Sales revenue and profit figures for 2008 are expected in May or June, Budvar said.
