Further details have been released about Schincariol’s new plant in the south of the country. As reported last week, the Brazilian brewer has announced plans to open a new brewery in the municipality of Igrejinha.
Schincariol will invest 170m reals (US$58.52m) in the new factory. The plant will create around 250 direct and 2,500 indirect jobs. The brewer’s financial and planning director Jose Domingos Francischinelli was reported to say in the Portugese News Digest that Igrejinha has been chosen primarily for its geographical position.
The southern states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina account for 9% of the country’s beer consumption. Francischinelli added that another reason for choosing Igrejinha was the trade block of Chile and the countries of Mercosur, to which part of the plant’s production will be exported.
The new brewery will have an annual production capacity of 150m litres of beer and 50m litres of water, fruit juices and soft drinks. Construction should be completed in 10 months, with production due to begin by the end of 2004.
