AmBev, or Companhia de Bebidas das Americas, Brazil’s leading brewer, is to invest US$40m in constructing a brewery in Peru.

The move will allow AmBev to introduce its products into the Andean region. But beverage analysts believe it will face stiff competition from Union de Cervecerias Peruanas Backus & Johnston, or Backus, which is controlled by Colombia’s Bavaria and has a virtual monopoly in the market.

In a statement the company said: “This is a long-term investment, aimed primarily for the construction and installation of a beer factory with the production capacity of 1m hectolitres.”
