Woolworths has won the latest round in its race with Australia’s other supermarket giant Coles Myer, for an ever larger slice of the national retail liquor market.

The company has bought – for an undisclosed sum – South Australia’s largest independent group of six stores owned Baily & Baily, which had a reported annual turnover of A$50m (US$33m).

The deal leaves just 20 independents in a state of 1.5 million people.
