The man credited with inventing bag-in-box wine, South Australian grape grower Thomas Angove, has died aged 92.
It was Mr Angove’s idea to put wine in a resealable plastic bag inside a cardboard box that changed wine packaging forever in the 1960s.
Managing director of Angove Wines, John Angove, who is Thomas’s son, told media today he remembered his father with the prototype for the cask, or boxed wine, and admitted he thought at the time that no-one would buy it.
“He thought he was onto a good thing and history certainly indicates that he was,” Mr Angove said of his father’s innovation.
The family has a long tradition of producing quality wines for the domestic and export market.
