ASICS has patented a method for producing polymer members with enhanced coating adhesion. By irradiating a curable composition with energy rays, forming a polymer coating, and post-curing the object, the process ensures reduced peeling of the coating. The post-curing step results in a lower surface energy than the polymer coating. GlobalData’s report on ASICS gives a 360-degree view of the company including its patenting strategy. A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11884003B2) discloses a method for producing a polymer member with a polymer coating on a polymer shaped object. The process involves curing a curable composition with energy rays to form the polymer shaped object, followed by applying a polymer coating and subjecting the object to post-curing with additional energy rays. This post-curing step results in a lower surface energy for the polymer shaped object compared to the polymer coating, enhancing its properties.

During the formation of the polymer coating, a liquid coating agent containing a polymer is applied and dried on the polymer shaped object. The curable composition used is a liquid photocurable composition that can be cured by light, with the presence of an ultraviolet-curable (meth)acrylate compound and a photopolymerization initiator. The resulting polymer member, such as a shoe member, exhibits entangled or chemically bonded molecular chains between the polymer shaped object and the polymer coating after post-curing, enhancing the overall structure and properties of the product. This innovative method offers a unique approach to producing polymer members with improved surface energy and molecular interactions, potentially impacting various industries requiring polymer coatings on shaped objects.
