The Swiss parliament is to consider repealing legislation banning the herbal liqueur, absinthe, according to a report from Agence France Presse.
Deputy Jean-Claude Cornu has asked the Council of States to consider legalising the production and distribution of the spirit in Switzerland nearly a century after it was banned amid fears that it cause insanity. The product was also banned in many other European countries, including France, until 1981.
The Val de Travers, a valley in the northern Jura Hills, claims to be the original birthplace of absinthe which is made from wormwood. It is still produced illegally in the region.
