Quite rightly, this month’s Global New Product Database from drinks research group Mintel has a decidedly wintery feel. With entries from hot chocolate to eggnog, hot drinks dominate the list of brand launches, however there’s also an interesting Pernod listing.

Advent calendar for men
Just before Christmas we saw a more adult appeal given to advent calendars in Switzerland. Instead of chocolates, the new product from Feldschlösschen was filled with beer. It was targeted at men and packaged in a carton with the days of the week for December on the front. It was priced at Skr 39.90 (around £4.46).

Soya egg nog
Also for the Christmas holiday, a new variation of eggnog was introduced. Eggnog is a traditional holiday beverage, which can now be consumed by all – including health conscious consumers thanks to a new release from SoyaWorld. Its So Nice Soy-based Noel Nog is an eggnog-flavoured drink that’s packed with vitamins, minerals, and calcium and is a healthy alternative to regular eggnog. It is made with organic soybeans and is also low fat.

Magnum hot chocolate
Iglo-Ola has come up with an innovative twist on ice cream in Portugal. New there is Magnum Hot, based on the company’s best-selling stick ice cream brand. The product comprises chocolate flavoured ice cream in a 175g plastic cup. It is intended to be tipped out into a mug (as one solid block), then microwaved for two minutes to create a rich, chocolately drink. Parent company Unilever is presumably hoping to extend its impulse ice cream sales into the winter months with this innovative approach, although some consumers will no doubt eat the ice cream frozen, straight from the cup. A carton holding two cups retails at £2.99. This is not the first time that the company has experimented with hot ice cream – in March 2003, again in Portugal, Iglo-Ola introduced Ola Quente & Frio, an ice cream log with a hot sauce to be poured over it.

Well Being teas
Wellness and wellbeing are terms that are increasingly seen on a wide variety of health-oriented food and beverage products. Often these are products with vitamin-/mineral-fortification that offer balanced nutrition in the form of controlled fat and calorie content. In other cases these are products that offer “natural” well being, such as fruit teas and infusions. In Ireland, Lyons has introduced a new range of wellbeing infusions in three varieties: Relax, Revive, and (most interestingly) Restore, a variety said to be ideal after meals. It is blended with mint (31%), verbena (19%), melissa (12%) liquorice (9%) and rooibos, and is available as a 32g pack of 20 bags.

Regional Japanese offer
Coca-Cola in Japan has launched a new line of canned ready-to-drink coffees, under the brand name Georgia Area Blend. There are four varieties in the line-up and, as the name suggests, these are formulated specifically for the four different regions of Japan. The variety for the north of the country (Hokkoku) contains more sugar than the other three, to “combat cold and energise the body”. The Kansai version (for the Osaka and Kyoto area) has the highest milk content, at 17%, to cater for the local preference towards milky coffee. In the Tokyo metropolitan area the Kanto version has a moderate combination of sweetness and milk to give a refreshing taste. Finally, the Nangoku variety for the south of the country contains more coffee than the others, to give a bitter flavour suited to the more temperate climate. They are packaged in 190g ring-pull metal cans priced at the equivalent of £0.90.

Fashionable Pernod Ricard
Fashion designer, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada is once again delving into the world of new products. Recently, there has been Agatha Ruiz de la Prada first aid plasters in Spain from Salvelox (Cederroth). And back in July, the company was involved in the packaging design of a Norit brand (Industrias Marca) fabric detergent again in Spain. Now in France, the designer has been involved in the packaging design of a limited edition Pernod Ricard bottle. It is a bright and colourful sunshine design entitled Soleils par…Agatha Ruiz de la Prada.
