An Australian government report today found 31,133 people died from alcohol abuse between 1990 and 2001 but was markedly silent on any restrictive response.

Release of the report was left to a parliamentary secretary, Trish Worth, who said the figures were alarming and that the federal government would take note of the findings in the next budget. She did not elaborate.

The report found there was an “alarming” increase from 1% to 9% in liquor drinking by teenage girls because of advertising images and pre-mixed drinks.
