The charismatic businessman and chairman of one of Hungary's most famous spirits companies, Peter Zwack, has announced that he is to stand for political office.

Zwack, 75, is standing for parliament in April's general election and is tipped to win. He has said he will retain his position as chairman of Zwack Unicum Rt.

A well-known figure in Hungary's business community and throughout the country, Zwack is no stranger to politics. He was Hungary's ambassador to the US from 1990 to 1994 and was an independent MP from 1994 to 1998. Zwack is standing on a platform of opposition to the present centre-right government's interference in business and private affairs which he believes is damaging Hungary's ability to attract capital and threatens to divide the country.
