The Wine & Spirits Trade Association (WSTA) has taken legal action to recover missing funds from its 2008 financial accounts.

A GBP25,000 (US$41,000) hole in the trade body's financial accounts for calendar 2008 has been uncovered, a spokesperson for the group confirmed to just-drinks today (13 August).

Annual turnover at the WSTA is around GBP1.2m, with membership fees providing the majority of funds.

WSTA chief executive Jeremy Beadles said in a statement: "These matters are the subject of ongoing legal investigation and we do not propose to comment further until enquiries have been completed. But the situation does not affect the ongoing financial viability of the WSTA or our plans in 2009."
