Pernod Ricard's UK boss has been elected as the new chairman of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA).

Denis O'Flynn will succeed Nick Hyde, ex-chairman of Diageo Wines Europe, in the role in January, the trade body announced today. Hyde has been the WSTA's chairman since late 2011

O'Flynn has been a member of the trade group's executive board for the last three years.

“By working together, the trade has achieved a lot in the last few years and I am committed to building on this progress,” said O'Flynn, who has worked for Pernod since 1998. “This will be particularly important as the trade gears up to make its case for a fairer duty regime that recognises the existing and potential contribution of the industry to jobs and growth.”

Earlier this year, the WSTA welcomed a move by the UK's Chancellor, George Osborne, to scrap automatic duty hikes on alcohol, known as the 'escalator'.
