WoSA has opened a Hong Kong office

Trade body Wines of South Africa (WoSA) has opened a new satellite office in Hong Kong to help producers target key Asian markets.

The group's Michaela Stander, who has been focussing on the region since 2008 while based in South Africa, will run the dedicated office. WoSA already has regional offices in London and New York City.

Siobhan Thompson, WoSA's CEO, said: "We can now more effectively support the growing numbers of South African producers trading in Asia, along with their importers, through increased education, networking and involvement in trade and consumer exhibitions in the region."

Stander's focus will be Hong Kong, which has Asia's highest per capita consumption of wine.

On the wider opportunity, Thompson said: "There is a rising interest in the South African wine category, notably in China, where consumers are becoming more adventurous and more willing to make new wine discoveries."

She added: "The implementation of China's recent austerity measures and the resultant market correction is seeing the culture of gifting being replaced by the far more sustainable culture of consumption."
