Spain has requested that it be allowed to send some 14m hectolitres of wine for distillation in order to ease the oversupply situation in the country.

Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that the figure was equivalent to 30% of last year's harvest.

So far Spain has received permission from the EU to distil only 6.6m hl.

Spain's winemakers produced 48m hl in 2004. Domestic consumption fell to 12m hl. Exports were flat at 11m hl.
