UK trade body the Wine & Spirit Trade Association has urged the country's Government to prioritise a free-trade agreement with Australia and New Zealand, once the UK leaves the European Union.

The group said the countries are among the most popular wine regions for UK consumers, and major destinations for the country's spirits. Dropping tariffs would aid UK alcohol businesses that rely on wine imports into the country as well as spirits exports, the WSTA argued in a submission to the Trade Select Committee last week.

Speaking today, WSTA chief executive Miles Beale said the UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, has championed new trade deals for post-Brexit Britain. Beale said an agreement with Australia and New Zealand would be a "win-win" for trade and consumers.

"There is strong support on both sides for this sort of bilateral trade agreement, which should become a blueprint for our future trade agreements with other countries outside the EU," Beale continued.

The WSTA has lobbied hard for the UK alcohol industry in the wake of Britain's decision in 2016 to leave the EU. In October, the group signed a Brexit position paper with fellow trade groups the Scotch Whisky Association, SpiritsEurope and the Comité Européen des Entreprises Vins.
