UK beer and wine producer Chapel Down has posted a 15% increase in full-year sales as wine revenues jumped by one-fifth.

The publicly-listed company, which owns the Chapel Down English wine and Curious Brew beer brands, said today that total sales for the year to the end of December reached GBP11.8m (US$16.5m), up from GBP6.8m in the year-prior. Wine was the company's best performer, up 20% in sales to GBP8.1m. Meanwhile, Chapel's Curious Drinks unit, which includes Curious Brew and Curious Apple Cider, also delivered a sales increase, up 7% to GBP3.7m.

Chapel Down said the results show the company is becoming "a player with serious potential in growth markets" as it increasingly looks to exports for growth. Demand for English sparkling wines in "sophisticated international markets" is on the rise, the group noted, adding that it reached "with ease" an internal target for the US of selling 10,000 units in its first full year in the market. Chapel Down also said its move into spirits through a gin and vodka launched in November has shown "outstanding initial results", without giving further details.

Gross profits for the company's wine portfolio increased 12%, while beer and cider profits were up 11% for beer and cider.
