Winemakers in Alsace produced 25.8% more wine in 2004 than they did the year previously, according to figures from the French regional wine committee CIVA, it was reported on, it was reported yesterday.

The French region produced 1.26m hectolitres, up 7.4% compared to the average production in the last five years, CIVA said.

2003 was a particularly weak harvest due to poor weather.

Around 281,000 hl of Riesling was produced, with 274,994 hl of Pinot Blanc and 221,293 hl of Gewurztraminer.
