The Russian food and drinks group Wimm-Bill-Dann (WBD) has acquired a 95% stake in the juice and concentrate producer Deponsa.

WBD said today it had paid roughly US$3.4m for the acquisition.

"The factory is strategically positioned with easy access to large reserves of high-quality local raw materials, which will allow us to reduce our dependence on imported juice concentrates," Dmitry Kolokatov, head of Wimm-Bill-Dann's juice division was quoted as saying in a statement. Depsona has a 1.2% share of the Russian juice market and a production capacity of 32m litres a year.

Earlier in the month French drinks group Danone increased its shareholding in Wimm-Bill Dann paying a reported US$9.9 million ($17.50/share) in raising its stake from 4.95% to 6.24%.
