William Grant & Sons has created an exclusive expression of The Balvenie malt whisky for France's biggest airport retailer, Aelia.

The Balvenie Single Cask 1970 was chosen by The Balvenie malt master David Stewart and Aelia's senior liquor buyer Philippe Lanusse. Only 191 bottles of the whisky, which will only be available at Aelia's stores at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, have been released. Each bottle is priced at EUR680 (US$982).

"The Balvenie Single Cask will appeal to the growing number of knowledgeable customers who are looking for rare items unavailable on the high street, and who are willing to experiment and trade up," Lanusse said this week. "The demand for rare whiskies is intensifying, especially among travellers from Asia, and we are sure that this new exclusive will have a broad appeal."

Aelia, part of French media conglomerate Lagardère, operates 130 stores at airports across France, as well as in the UK and Poland.
