Calgary's Wild Rose Brewery is urging its shareholders to greenlight an acquisition by Sleeman Breweries, the Canadian arm of Japan's Sapporo Breweries.

In a statement, Wild Rose said its board of directors will seek approval for an offer from Sleeman in a shareholder vote on 9 May. The brewer confirmed an offer from Sleeman had been made but gave no further details.

A spokesperson from Sleeman did not respond to a request for comment.

Wild Rose said it was "hard pressed not to see" the benefits a Sleeman takeover would have for "Wild Rose employees, the brand, and the community". It also said Sleeman would be a "great fit" for the brewer, which started in 1996 and is one of Alberta's biggest craft breweries.

"Alberta is a province with high growth potential for both breweries and we see this partnership as an excellent opportunity to leverage each other's strengths and complementary portfolios as an amalgamated organisation," Wild Rose said.

Sapporo acquired Sleeman Breweries in 2006. Sleeman has three breweries in Canada, one in Guelph, Ontario, one in Vernon, British Columbia and one in Chambly, Québec.
