Whisk(e)y imports to Russia dropped by almost a quarter last year as alcohol shipments posted record declines in the struggling market, according to local reports.

Imports of global whisk(e)y fell by 22.3% to 33.59m litres as the weakening ruble damaged purchasing power, the Kommersant newspaper reported this week. Rum imports for 2015 were down by 35% to 4.76m litres while vodka plunged as deliveries from Ukraine came to almost a complete halt, the paper said.

"This is probably the worst situation in the market that I remember. Demand has fallen dramatically," Irina Fomina, president of wine importer MBG, was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

Yesterday, Remy Cointreau management said they were implementing price increases in Russia "as we speak" to combat declining sales in the country. Depletions were down double-digits over the past 12 months, according to Remy CFO Luca Moratta.
