Californian wine company Wente Vineyards has secured a tie-up with golfer Annika Sorenstam.

The family-owned company said earlier this week that Annika, a namesake Syrah wine, will be launched in the US next year. Sorenstam worked closely with Wente winemaker, Karl Wente, to help create the wine, the company said.

Annika will launch in the country in May.

"As someone who thoroughly enjoys fine wine, I am thrilled to be partnering with the Wente family on this project," said Sorenstam. "I was immediately impressed with the family's strong heritage and golfing traditions. It is exciting for me to be able to share this passion of mine with other wine lovers."

Wente's facility in the Livermore valley of California also includes a Greg Norman championship golf course.

The company is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, and claims to be the oldest continuously operated family-owned winery in the country.
