Welch's Global Ingredients Group, a supplier to the grape juice industry, has expanded into wine with an ingredient it claims will save wineries money.

The Niagara grape juice solution is designed as a filler or base wine for a variety of different wine styles. massachusetts-based Welch's said the Niagara grape, which is commonly used in soft drinks and juices, is a high-quality but cost-effective alternative to using wine grapes. It has been reformulated by Welch's for fermentation and blending with wine made from more traditional wine grape varieties.

"Juice grapes typically sell at a significantly lower-price when compared to wine grapes, which means [our reformulated] Niagara is a perfect option for winemakers looking to reduce raw material costs without impacting quality," the company said.

Welch's also supplies Concord grape juice to the wine production sector. The company said it has more winery-specific innovations in the pipeline without giving details.
