Germany saw consumption of mineral water reach 9.6 billion litres in 2003, a rise from the figure in 2002 of 8.4 billion litres.

The figures are estimates from the German Association of Mineral Water Bottlers (VDM).

Per capita mineral water consumption reached 129 litres, versus 114 litres, as hot weather in the summer boosted sales.

Sparkling mineral water retained its leader position with sales of 5.3 billion litres, an increase of 10%. But still water jumped 40% to reach 340 million litres.
