The Governor of the US state of Virginia has reversed a ban on single-serve bottled water at official functions and meetings in the state.

The ban was implemented last year by Bob McDonnell's predecessor Tim Kaine. However, the Governor yesterday (15 July) announced a reversal of the ban with immediate effect.

“This Governor is not going to put in place mandates that hurt Virginia industries,” McDonnell’s office said in a statement.

The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) applauded the decision.

“We are grateful to Governor McDonnell for recognising the value of bottled water companies to Virginia’s economy,” said Joseph Doss, president and CEO of IBWA. “We note that, with the exception of the ill-advised bottled water prohibition, Governor McDonnell is carrying over most of the ‘green’ policies to conserve resources and energy that were put in place by the previous administration.”

This week, San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom’s executive order to replace sugary soft drinks in vending machines with “healthier” beverages took effect.
