Twenty per cent less space has been booked for this year's Vinitech show, the world's biggest wine machinery and products trade fair.

The event, held in Bordeaux every two years, will this year take place on 28-30 November.

"We are 20% down on 2004 in terms of turnover and square metres sold," said Francois-Bernard Martin, director of Congresses and Exhibitions of Bordeaux (CEB), Vinitech's organisers.

"The wine business is bad, and has been for a long time. Makers of viticulture products are even worse off than the winemakers," Martin said.

In terms of exhibitor numbers, organisers would only say there will be "less than 800". Some 806 exhibitors took part in the event in 2004. Martin also said it will be difficult to match the number of visitors who attended Vinitech in 2004, when the show attracted some 44,500 attendees.
