Vinexpo has yet to give the final go-ahead for its new Tokyo show, it has emerged, days after the wine fair organisers confirmed it has had to cancel its inaugural Beijing event.

Speaking exclusively to just-drinks today (21 October), Vinexpo's new chief executive, Guillaume Deglise, said that he is unable to “confirm 100%” that the Japan show, scheduled for November 2014, will go ahead. “There are techinical issues with the place we have found," he said. "The place is not an exhibition centre, it's a hotel and it's the first time they will have organised an exhibition.”

Deglise said that Vinexpo has yet to start doing any business for the Tokyo show, but a decision on whether it will proceed will be taken in the “next couple of weeks”. He added: “It is still a project.”

Plans for the Tokyo show were first announced in June. At the time, Vinexpo said up to 400 exhibitors and around 3,000 visitors were expected for the show.

Meanwhile, on Friday it emerged that Vinexpo has cancelled its new Beijing event, scheduled for next June. The show has been pulled because of a failure to obtain a licence from China's Government. “We don't know why exactly the Government was reluctant to give us a licence,” Deglise told just-drinks.

The Vinexpo chief said it is “highly possible” a Beijing event might happen in the future, but “definitely not in 2014”. He added: “We need to see where the visitors come from (for the Hong Kong show) and if we see an increase from northern China, we'll see for another year (about Beijing).”

He added: “We want to focus on Hong Kong for now.”

Deglise was confirmed as Vinexpo's new CEO earlier this month, replacing Robert Beynat.
