Vina San Pedro, Chile's second largest winery, launched its Santa Helena label on 1st Jan as an independent subsidiary winery.

The new winery will have its own production facilities, cellars and vineyards. Up until the third quarter of last year, Santa Helena wines were produced in Vina San Pedro's facilities using grapes from the winery giant's vineyards.  Santa Helena's vineyards and facilities are located now in central Chile's Maipo and Colchagua Valleys.

Vina San Pedro's decision to convert Santa Helena into a new subsidiary was part of a wide scale restructuring process underway at the company.

San Pedro general manager Matias Elton told the El Diario newspaper that turning Santa Helena into a full-fledged winery will make the brand more marketable, since "every label is valued according to the winery that's behind it."  He said the restructuring will give Santa Helena a "special draw" because consumers are interested in Chile's emerging wineries.
