Last September, PureCircle said hold-ups in the US followed allegations that shipments had come from a company accused of forced prison labour. The company said at the time that it had provided documentation to prove this was not the case.

Today, the company said trade with US-based customers, which represent one third of PureCircle's sales, can now resume.

"We understand, and fully support, the Customs and Border Protection's commitment to ensuring that forced labour is never used in the production of any products imported into the USA," said group CEO Magomet Malsagov. "We are pleased that this matter has been rigorously investigated and that PureCircle has been cleared by the CBP."

Malsagov continued: "This experience has only reinforced our commitment to human rights and fair labour practices in any of our markets as well as strengthened our capabilities in providing traceability and transparency."

Stevia is a plant-based sweetener, widely used by soft drinks producers including The Coca-Cola Co and PepsiCo.
