Wine exports from Côtes de Provence last year gained a significant boost in the shape of a 54% rise in shipments to the US versus 2010.

The leap resulted in the region's global exports rising by more than 9% on 2010, the equivalent of around 12m bottles, according to figures issued by Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence (CIVP) last week. Rosé wines accounted for 83% of Provence exports in 2011.

"US consumers may be turning their back on home-produced rosés but they are developing a liking for dry rosés and among them, those from Provence," a CIVP official told just-drinks.

"The US is now our biggest destination in volume, having edged ahead of Belgium last year, taking a share of global exports of almost 23%."

The US is already the premier market in value terms, with a share of over 31%.
