Cognac sales and volumes in the US experienced double-digit growth last year, according to data released by the Distilled Industry Spirits Council (DISCUS) this week.

Cognac volumes in the US were up 14% to 4.5m cases in 2015, while sales grew 16.2% to US$1.3bn, according to figures released by trade organisation DISCUS at an industry briefing in New York yesterday.

The biggest growth came from the super premium segment, where volumes leapt 20.3%. DISCUS defines super-premium as $30+ at retail.

The growth falls in line with moves by Cognac houses to re-focus their attention on the US market - and pull back from over-emphasis on China. China has seen Cognac sales nosedive after anti-corruption measures were implemented by the government in late-2012.

Back in 2014, the then-interim CEO of Remy Cointreau admitted the company depended too much on sales in Asia and would instead seek a "geographical balance". François Hériard Dubreuil said more emphasis would be placed on Cognac sales in the US, which he claimed at the time were "really carrying us" in the wake of sales declines in China.

In its most recent trading update, for the nine months to the end of December, Remy said sales of its Remy Martin Cognac in the Americas were "excellent".

Meanwhile in its half year results, released today, Moet Hennessy said its namesake Cognac "demonstrated strong momentum in the US across all ranges".
