Brands including Molson Coors's Coors Light are facing headwinds in the US

The world's biggest brewers appear to be struggling in the US, with Molson Coors following Anheuser-Busch InBev in blaming fresh sales declines on the North American market.

In nine-month results released today, Molson Coors said it faced "challenging market conditions" in North America as sales for the nine months to the end of September dipped 1% and profits fell 10%. Today's results account for last year's takeover of MillerCoors.

In the US, sales-to-retailers were down 3% in the quarter because of lower volumes in premium-light and below-premium segments.

AB InBev also blamed the premium-light segment for weak performance in the US in its year-to-date results, announced last week. Budweiser and Bud Light continued to lose market share, with AB InBev saying recent hurricanes in Texas and Florida hampered sales in the states.

The declines represent ongoing challenges for brands including Budweiser and Coors Light in the US as independent brewers and Mexican brands such as Corona Extra take share. Bud Light and Budweiser continue to lead the overall beer market in terms of value and volume, however sales have dipped significantly in the past decade.

Elsewhere in Molson Coors's results, European beer volumes and sales were up as the continent continued to deliver good news for the brewer. The brewer, which praised European gains in H1, said it took pricing and boosted volumes, however this was partly driven by the shift of some of Molson Coors' international business to the European reporting region.

CEO Mark Hunter said: "One year on from the close of the MillerCoors transaction, Molson Coors is driving a cohesive 'First Choice' commercial agenda, an expanded international business, a more efficient global organisation and a relentless focus on financial performance, all underpinned by highly engaged employees who are playing to win."
