The decision at Jones Soda Co. to focus on the launch of its canned products next year has hit third-quarter earnings, the US company announced yesterday (1 November).

Jones Soda Co. plans to launch its namesake brand in cans during the first quarter next year and investment on that project has weighed on earnings.

The Seattle-based group reported net income of US$194,774 for the quarter ended 30 September. That result compared to net earnings of $702,781 in the corresponding period last year. Nevertheless, Jones Soda saw quarterly revenues rise 15% to $10.2m.

President and CEO Peter van Stolk said: "Our earnings were impacted by our strategic decision to focus on the launch of our cans which is slated for the first quarter of 2007. The additional investments in this new operating platform are critical prior to the launch to ensure our future growth plans are achieved."

In September, Jones Soda signed a licence agreement with National Beverage Corp. The deal will see National Beverage produce and distribute Jones Soda and the range of Jones energy drinks for the next five years.
