The off-license chain Unwins is set to axe a net 135 jobs from its sales force, according to a press report today (13 September).

The news agency AFX claims to have learnt that the figure of around 135 is to be derived from just under 600 redundancies and the creation of 440 new positions.

Unwins was acquired by by DM Private Equity Ltd in March.

Currently each store has a manager, but Unwins wants to move to a multi-site model, with managers responsible for up to five outlets each.

AFX said that Unwins Wine Group Ltd had confirmed that a 90-day consultation period with staff is underway concerning a restructuring. However, it would not confirm the figures involved.

In a statement, it said that the restructuring was designed to produce "meaningful" operational cost savings.
