UK Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt has announced that a smoking ban in all enclosed public places will come into effect from 1 July next year.

The ban will cover all pubs, bars and clubs.

"This is a triumph for public health and a huge step forward for health protection," Hewitt said.

Not all details of the ban are yet known. Guidelines are still expected on the type of outdoor areas in which smoking will still be permitted.

The announcement of the date at least gives the drinks trade time to prepare for the change.
