European Union wine importers to the UK will deal with lower-than-feared levels of red tape following the latter's departure, after the UK Government agreed to temporarily suspend import certification requirements.

The Government has already promised to bestow a grace period on the forms - known as VI-1s - under pressure from UK trade group the Wine & Spirit Trade Association, which estimated their implementation after Brexit would cost the UK wine industry upwards of GBP70m (US$91m) a year. Authorities have now confirmed a nine-month post-Brexit suspension for the forms, the WSTA said yesterday.

Miles Beale, chief executive of the WSTA, said yesterday the decision is a "victory for common sense".

"The additional form-filling and laboratory tests needed, had paperwork requirements not been suspended, would have added a massive burden on businesses and consumers alike," Beale continued.

According to the WSTA, the V1-1 forms would have been "a nightmare" for the UK wine industry, adding GBP0.10 (US$0.13) to the price of a bottle of wine and restricting consumer choice.
