India's UB Group is reportedly in talks to buy a distillery in France as it seeks to expand overseas.

India's Economic Times today (22 February) cited sources close to UB who claimed that the company was in takeover talks with a number of distillers in Europe.

"UB is in talks with some other distillers in Europe, but the negotiations are closest to fruition with a distillery based in France," a source close to the group was quoted as saying.

UB officials could not be reached for comment as just-drinks went to press.

UB last year consolidated its dominance of the Indian spirits market with the acquisition of a majority stake in local rival Shaw Wallace & Co.

The company is known to be keen to expand overseas, although earlier this month, it ruled itself out of the running for Whyte & Mackay's Invergordon business.
