The KeelClip, a so-called "topper" that holds individual cans in a multipack in place, will roll out through European bottlers Coca-Cola HBC and Coca-Cola European Partners. As well as reducing the need for plastic shrink wrap, the toppers also use less cardboard in the Coca-Cola system's multipacks.

As part of the initiative, Coca-Cola HBC has pledged to remove shrink wrap from all of its can multipacks in European Union markets by the end of 2021. CCEP said in October it will remove all unnecessary or hard-to-recycle plastic from its portfolio. The two bottlers are investing a combined EUR29m (US$32m) in the KeelClip project.

KeelClip is designed by Graphic Packaging International and was only unveiled in October. GPI has already agreed to work with global brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev, which will use the KeelClip on Bud Light multipacks in the UK from March next year.

Coca-Cola's bottlers are upping their sustainability initiatives to achieve targets in the company's 'World Without Waste' programme, unveiled at the start of last year. Earlier this week, CCEP said that all plastic bottles produced at its Swedish production site will be made from recycled PET starting next year.
