The Coca-Cola Co has agreed to grant bottling territory in Chicago to a subsidiary of Reyes Holding, the biggest beer distributor in the US.

Coca-Cola will hand territories in the greater Chicago area to Great Lakes Coca-Cola Distribution, the company said today. The transaction is expected to close next year.

Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

The move is part of an initiative by Coca-Cola to return to a franchise model in North America, as opposed to owning bottlers.

Great Lakes is owned by Reyes Holding, which signed a letter of intent with Coca-Cola in February over territory bottling rights. Reyes said this month it is to increase its US beer distribution to about 140m cases a year after agreeing to buy Florida's Gold Coast Beverage Distributors. The company also distributes other beverages and food.
